SPS Training
The strengthening of biosecurity capacity through training and capacity building, is an important focus area of the NBH.
Internship Programmes
Pest Risk Analysis
Biosecurity is reliant on risk assessment; especially with regards to imports and exports. To build capacity for this at the Department of Agriculture’s Directorate: Plant Health, the NBH facilitates a training programme to enhance the understanding of South Africa’s phytosanitary regulatory system.
The training also provides exposure to animal health regulations, and trainees are responsible for developing strategies for pest risk mitigation, conducting pest risk assessments, and evaluating scientific data.
Agricultural Inputs Control
To increase capacity for the registration of agricultural remedies at the Department of Agriculture, four interns were trained by the NBH and placed at the Directorate: Agricultural Inputs Control, for a period of two years.
Since aspects such as skilled surveillance and reporting capacity are foundational to finding solutions, selected interns are also placed at agricultural companies and organisations.
